calling all BSD users....

I have just purchased a new rack system intended for my serice requests. The problem I am having is getting X to work. I am familiar with the installation process as well as use. For the past few months I have been using freeBSD on my laptop. Everything that was compatible was working great. But my new troubles on this fixed server I cant seem, according to the error message, set the fonts path correctly. I check it out and it does exisit but wont launch. For a sanity check i installed Mandrake and with a slight misbehaving then with a kick and a promise it worked. But I would rather use BSD. So I made a bootable netBSD install and after completion, the same font error appears. What da hell am I doing wrong?
Oh freeBSD 4.5
netBSD 1.5.2
and Mandrake 8.2

video =Sis630
server =SVGA
tried 3.x.x and 4.x.x Xfree86 libs
