Busybox "top" shows more than 100% mem usage for first 2-3 processes added together

Hi,

While running busybox top utility, if I add 2 or 3 highest memory consumers, they count to more than 100%. Something like this -

PID PPID USER STAT VSZ %MEM %CPU COMMAND
1424 1 root S 300m165.4 0.0 /bin/Server.exe
1145 1 root S 87804 47.1 0.0 /bin/gdl_server

Mem usage of two processes shown above - 65.4 + 47.1 > 100

And added to these are other processes too, with their own share of memory.

So, I just want to understand that whether the "top" utility is behaving weird or am I not able to understand something?

Also it would be great if someone could tell me what "300m1" means in the "VSZ" column ?. See the first row.

What is the delay between updates and does that correspond to your "Steady State" interval based on Little's Law?

If you want precision you first need to calibrate your system and determine your steady state of run.

Reference: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-linux-748748/ to first determine your steady state, change your interval and run again. It shouldn't show such a high variance (In your case 12%)

hi
I know this is an old question, but I have encountered a similar question, and I don't know why.
Additional question is that, when running "top" with my busybox(1.19.3), and press the "s" button, it shows like this:

PID VSZ VSZRW^ RSS (SHR) DIRTY (SHR) STACK COMMAND
759 4812 1480 912 760 132 0 84 top
734 4808 1476 1004 756 144 0 84 -/bin/sh
722 4744 1468 728 552 112 0 84 /usr/sbin/inetd
719 2124 404 308 256 44 0 84 syslogd
1 2120 400 388 352 52 28 84 {linuxrc} init
735 2120 400 112 88 52 28 84 {linuxrc} init
736 2120 400 112 88 52 28 84 {linuxrc} init
739 2120 400 112 88 52 28 84 {linuxrc} init

Could anyone tell me what the "VSZRW^" and "RSS" means?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I think 1424 1 root S 300m165.4 0.0 /bin/Server.exe
means that 300million of VSZ and 165.4 % of %Mem. This is a case with Busybox top command. Find the answer in the below link for more details
