Exclamation getting a DVD Burner to work and then how to back up and burn DVD's!!!

ok I just switched to Ubuntu Linux and I have no clue what program to use to back up my DVD's and what program to burn them with. When I was using windows I was using DVD Shrink and DVD Decoder. So if someone can give me links to good DVD back up and burning programs that would be great.

Install K3B and cdrao and you will be able to burn dvds and back them up. You need to edit your /etc/apt/source.conf to allow multiverse

so
Code:
sudo apt-get isntall k3b cdrao

Normally with Gnome in Ubuntu the drive will be mounted so that you cant "accidently" eject a dvd/cd disk while linux is reading or writing to it. If there is a disk in the drive, right click the CD icon on your desktop and choose eject.

install dvdrip and transcode and all necessary dependencies, which is fairly easy to check as dvdrip has a built in dependencies checker. in my opinion by far the best tool for Linux. i have also had success with acidrip, k9copy, rip-o-matic and even dvdshrink with wine installed but the latter one requires you to understand wine to a degree so you can set the parameters for the working directories properly. but once you have that right it works pretty much the same as in windoze. if you install mscore fonts first it even looks great too! if you use ubuntu (and you are) or mepis you can install automatix2 which makes it easy to install a lot of useful apps including dvdrip. just google for it. i am sure you'll love it.

regards
ron

that other problem with your drive not opening could be many reasons, try another thread like hardware.
