building openfiler system

Guys I have some questions about openfiler. I'm interested in deploying it so I can get a better understanding of enterprise storage systems and also for Vmware ESX Infrastructure 3 training. I would like to aks you guys that run openfiler what type of systems do you have it running on? I'm trying to
decide what type of testbox I need to set it up. Also do any of you guys run raid with your openfiler system and can you use regular promise raid controllers? I've heard that some of the Promise raid controllers that work in windows do not work
well in Linux do to driver support? Last of all, how well does software raid perform in linux? I've heard most people like hardware raid better because its easier to recover from than sofware raid. Any help would be much appreciated.
