I have suse 8.0 proffesional with kde 3.0.0. I have quite a lot of problems with my new suse, so I'm trying to get help here. Here are the issues:
1. Some kde applications (KreateCD, KXicq2, KBear, kshowmail...) use very strange - "fixed-width" - fonts (like Courier New). Other kde applications use the default kde font and they work fine. Why?
2. I installed some ttf fonts from windows partition. They worked fine some days, but now a lot of them looks strange. I get some strange symbols instead of letters when I try to use them. Why?
:::PROBABLY FOR SUSE 8.0 USERS ONLY:::
3. USB. I have a usb hub and 5 usb devices connected. But only two or three (depends on <I'dontknowwhat>) of them are autodetected on startup. Then I have to connect them manually and then it works. Why are they not autodetected?
4. I configured my scanner, but I think sane or a similar library is missing, because I cannot start any scanning program. Is there any suse user who knows this issue?
5. I cannot find Xine. Does any SuSE 8.0 user have Xine on his/her CDs?
Huh! Finally. Is there anyone who knows anything? ... :-)
I know that xine is not on Suse 8.0 - for a reason not known to man they are pushing the players from KDE although they don't work with anything at all.
WTF!!! 8 F*$!#ING discs and no Xine? I would have thought that they pretty much had the whole Linux thing wrapped up with all them CD's. Anything with a GPL or similar anyway. Crazy. Well matjaz85, you could compile it, or rather, go with something better like Mplayer. It's very configurable, and once you figure it out it's pretty solid. Been able to play everything I have thrown at it so far. And if you are into GUI's it has a face called GMplayer. Just compile it in.
Other than the few problems above, how do you like the 8.0?
Thanx for information on xine and (g)mplayer. I'll try it out and I hope it's on !7! CDs:-) [+ 1DVD]
Well, heh, as you see, I have some problems, but I'm a total newbie. It's my third distribution (after suse 7.2 and mandrake 8.2) and I have to say that it's far the best distribution I ever tried. Installation was a piece of cake and configuration, too, except modem (not supported) and known problems with autodetection on startup. But I'm quite sure it's a bug and will be solved as soon as possible.
If you're thinking of buying a new distribution, you should try suse 8.0.
As far as i know you 'll waste your time looking for it on the cd's - mplayer is definitely not there and a lot of guys complained about xine not being there anymore.
I'll stick to debian - they got anything i could ever need.
