browsing problem with firefox 9.0.1

good day!

really have been trying to work around this but seem to have hit the skills wall.

running ultimate edition, ubuntu 10.10

Getting a "server not found" error when trying to get to www.ebay.com however I seem to be able to get to other sites, like yahoo, or aol.com etc etc.

tried to do some pings and got the following;
example: www.google.com
www.l.google.com ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 4005ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 32.444/32.986/33.500/0.445 ms

example: www.ebay.com
ping: unknown host www.ebay.com

Is there a simple network, proxy, port setting? something that is preventing the ebay domain, name or ip address from accessing it??

thanks/Gary

Are you behind a firewall, proxy?
Did it worked before?
Does it work with another browser?
Is this your home network?

Kind regards

See if you use a proxy in the settings from firefox.
Try to use a different nameserver (8.8.8.8)
Look in the /etc/hosts file for any anomalies.

Kind regards

I think your DNS server is likely the problem. Change it in the router settings and it should work. I usually use opendns to avoid the usual issues with the DNS servers provided by the ISP.

ok, looking at the DNS servers under network settings panel. I have the option to add and delete , I also see 3 DNS servers listed in there. Now should I be adding or deleting anything? I don't see a setting for "opendns"....

appreciate a little more help...
thanks!

Well, go to the opendns site and use the IP addresses of their DNS servers. It also has instructions on the site.

DONE!, FIXED!!!

Thank you for the suggestion to go to the open dns website.
This resolved all my browsing problems. Also things seem MUCH faster. Might be because my wireless router was not secure, and may have had neighbors piggy backing off me chocking down my band width,.....but overall I am in great shape now.

thanks again!
