My old computer is dying (switch has problem turning machine on). I'm looking at replacing it with the tiny intel NUC box. Is the model above compatible with Mint 18? I'm a competent user, can install OS myself but can't say I'm too technically gifted.

Would like to know if anyone has any problem installing and running Mint 18 on the intel NUC.

Sorry, I thought you asked if it was compatible with LM18.

I haven't personally tested it but I'd have to think that you could install most any modern linux on that device. Intel may be bashed somewhat in linux forums but they do supply a lot of code. The newer kernels support these devices better.
And they claim it as fully supported.

You should be able to install linux to that system. (assuming it has ram and hard drive/ssd)

I had terrible experiences with Linux on my NUC5i7RYH, and ended up returning it (and paying the restock penalty). It had issues with overheating, fan noise, and resume-from-suspend. It is possible that the 6th generation fixed some of the 5th generation's problems, I really can't say since I was so soured on the experience.

I ended up replacing my NUC with a mini-ITX tower that measures only 12"x9"x8". While it is larger than the NUC, it is a more powerful computer in every way (4 core desktop processor! PCIE slot for a graphics card!), and it runs cool and quiet due to the improved airflow of the larger case.

For what it's worth, Linux Mint 17.x ran well on my NUC for the short time I owned it (other than the issues mentioned above). Therefore, while I don't consider them to be quality hardware, I would have to say the answer to your question is yes: Intel NUC's have good Linux compatibility. System76 rebrands them as Meerkats and sells them with Ubuntu preinstalled, for example.

My box is in its dying days. NUC box is so tempting because of its size, but have read about all sorts of problems. I think I'll follow snowpine and go for a mini MTX tower.

i don't think it's such a big problem.
if it's a desktop, well there's just a twisted pair cable with a switch, plugged into the mobo... surely it can be replaced.
even if it's a laptop, it's repairable.
