Booting various live cd from an USB

hello,

I think everybody know it is possible and quite easy to have any live cd in a usb. You just choose your distribution and google or use this software:

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

ok, I was thinking it will be really great to have a boot loader in the usb and have several live cd to choose.

I found that in google:

http://www.menoyot.com/center/linuxmultibootusb.html

This guy, installed various distributions in the usb, but not live cd. It doesn't work if it is not your computer.

I have tried to find it, googling but all the topics speak about just one live cd inside the usb.

anyone know if it exists or anyway to do it?

Greetings !

well, you can use Grub2 to boot iso's off USB
some

You can also boot some distro's from iso, off usb, using grub1, or syslinux

sidux and grml/hag both can boot this way
I'm sure there are others?

Why does it matter?
why do you wanna just boot the iso's?

Lantius 11-09-2009 03:26 PM

Well, If I have the live I can boot it anywhere.

I mean, i can go to a friend's house, and boot the usb, and choose from sysrescuecd if i want to help him with something or a desktop distribution to watch a film, or something it is not possible in its computer, or just to show him some different distributions :-)

linus72 11-09-2009 03:31 PM

Oh!

I was hoping thats what you meant:)

Yeah, bro
what distro's you wanna boot from usb and how big is USB?

now, you can boot many distros and run them as persistent too

so, what you wanna boot?

Lantius 11-09-2009 03:42 PM

The usb is 32gb !! I found it very cheap in ebay :-) I had one very old of 1gb, so it was time to have something bigger.

It has not arrived, so it will take a pair of weeks more or less. But when I saw 32gb, I quickly though about multiboot live cd :-) so I began to google it.

I was thinking systemrescuecd, basic, ubuntu 9.10, it really goes fast, debian and mandriva.

someone more you recommend me? :-)

linus72 11-09-2009 04:41 PM

OK
since you got time before the usb gets there...

we'll make this thread into a multiboot usb tutorial?
cool?

I'll break my answers down into sections:

1) Prepping USB
formating & partitioning usb
setting bootflag

2) Booting-
syslinux
grub
extlinux
bootmanagers

3) Breakdown of good usb distro's by family (debian, ubuntu, slack/slax, puppy, etc)
common boot cheatcodes of each
mono-persistent distro's (those that save to the partition they boot from)
bi-persistent distro's (those that require a seperate partition to save to)
bugs and difficulties with each
which is the best for usb for me/you?

4) Roll your Own; remastering a distro to meet your needs and wants
which distro's are easy to remaster
using homemade scripts to automate the process
tricks and hints

5) Making the USB
making alot of menus and sub-menus
grub menu.lst
syslinux & extlinux
text boot menu or graphical boot menu
tools I use to construct multidistro cd/dvd/usb kits

did I miss anything?

Lantius 11-11-2009 02:55 PM

Yes, cool!

I don't know a lot, but I'll try my best and I'll learn by the way :-)

In fact, the part 3, part 4, and part 5 are quite unknown.

Anyway, do you know how we can have a post which both of us can edit? If not we can use another platform and at the end publish it here,

what do you think?

Greetings !

linus72 11-11-2009 04:41 PM

OK
well
not sure what medium we could use, as we both need to access our "wiki" but not let others edit it,
Maybe we could start a sourceforge project thats just a wiki?

we could use my forum too, and maybe I can set it so only you/I have access?

do you have any html ability?

Lantius 11-12-2009 04:31 AM

Yes, I know html,xhtml :-)

We even can use a google group. It allow to have member and something called page that it can be edited and accept html code.

Do you like the idea or you prefer to use your forum?

I really don't care, just something to be able to edit both of us is ok.
