Hi -

1. Can you log in (from text mode)?
In other words, is it *completely black*, or just no GUI?

2. If it's "completely black", can you type <Ctl-Alt-F1> and log in from
a different virtual console (i.e. from the command line)?

If so, do you see any interesting messages in /var/log/messages relating
to the "black screen"?

Any X windows errors (for example, anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log)?

3. Failing all else, can you boot from the CD into "rescue mode" to see what's happening?

Hi,

Thnx for the response.

1.It first flickers as if it is trying to get the login screen but it ends up with dark screen.

2.ctl+alt+f1 is not working.

3.I have checked the /var/log/messages for the timestamp when i tried to boot last time, these are the lines which contain both X and error.

Oct 7 23:39:29 localhost kernel: vesafb: probe of vesafb0 failed with error -6
Oct 7 23:39:38 localhost sendmail[2435]: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available
Oct 7 23:39:57 localhost gdm[3131]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Oct 7 23:40:07 localhost gdm[3321]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0
Oct 7 23:40:17 localhost gdm[3475]: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

4.Following lines are found at the end of /var/log/Xor.0.log

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.X.Org
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

Gee - your X server can't find the frame buffer? Then it can't find the default font? And dies?

That's not good.

Perhaps you should consider re-installing X Windows?

PS:
It sounds like you can log in to the host (perhaps via "telnet")?

If so, you might want to edit /etc/inittab, and set your default runlevel to "3":

id:3:initdefault:

Perhaps that might give you at least a command-line login (along with <alt-F1>) at your console.

But you should still consider re-installing X...

did you guys ever figure out the root cause of the issue above? I'm having a very similar problem in which after booting I cannot get to a login screen and my monitor is completely black.

I have a Dell GX280 with a USB keyboard and USB mouse plugged into it. I turn on the computer and I can get to a GUI screen that allows me to select which customized version of RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX i want to run. I'm using a GRUB boot loader, and I select "red hat enterprise linux AS (2.6.9.0.42)ELsmp". After the selection I get a few console messages that shows linux kernal 2.6.9 is being loaded and other messages like that. After about 3 seconds of console messages the screen goes black(no console prompt, login screen or anything) and I don't know what to do except turn the machine off. When I do turn the machine off, I briefly see a bunch of console messages that show various services being shut off, and then the machine turns off.

How do I get to the log files to view the errors? Also, I don't have the RHEL installation CDs, but I think I can edit the boot command arguments on the GUI screen that I can get to. what should i do? how do i get to a console so i can try to edit the /etc/inittab file or better yet how do i get directly to a login screen? I wasn't the person that installed RHEL on the box, but the person that did said they used all the default settings for installation.

Thanks in advance for your help.
