search the web for Sys V init process (RH, Mandy, others) and BSD init process (*BSD systems)
basically your system boots in various runlevels and runs scripts pertaining these levels upon boot. All startup scripts are located under /etc/rc.d directory on RH systems.

Since no OS will boot if the BIOS and bootstrap loader can't find it, you might want to look at the Operating System Resource Center . They have some very interesting stuff on the entire bootstrapping process.
