Booting Linux without a password
Hello,
I would like to boot Linux without a password but still have X running. I'm running Redhat 9.0 with 2.4.20-8. I know that I can change the inittab to single user mode, but if I do that, I can't get X to run. I want to power on the box, start X and run my X based application without having to login. Thanks for your time! |
There is a post on this forum somewhere explaining how, but I don't remember where.

i believe if you use lilo, you can type in "linux single" at the boot prompt, im sure grub is similar.

I can boot single-user, but I can't seem to start X if I start in single-user mode. Is there something else I can do? Any help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

You could change the run level in inittab, but it is still going to want a password...
I have actually wondered about this same thing myself. |
KDE / KDM have an Autologin function, which will do this. You configure it within KDM or KDE and set runlevel to 5, and it'll auto boot into your user account.

Doesn't Gnome login thingy has that feature too?
