Arrow booting linux from ntldr

i am trying to boot a redhat linux 8 system off of ntldr for windows xp. i followed all the general step like copying the bootsector and putting it on the windows partition and logging it in the boot.ini file. when i try to boot red hat, though, it give me this error:

"windows couldn't load because the file

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

is missing. please reinstall this file."

would this have anything to do with the fact that i put the operating systems on two different physical drives? how could i
fix this problem?

If you get such an error loading RedHat it means you've copied wrong bootsector. I guess this one is Windows related.
Which partition is Linux installaed on and, more important, where's lLILo installed?

i installed windows on hda1 then i put linux on hdb1 and lilo on the first sector of hdb1. i ran:

dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=/bootsect.lin bs=512 count=1

and then copied bootsect.lin to my windows partition and added it to boot.ini

Have you started
lilo
after you configured it?
