Question bootable live Linux on USB flash drive

Since there are many live bootable Linux CDs available, I did find out that it is also possible to have a USB flash drive that way too. Is the process at all the same as when you create a live bootable disk by burning the .iso file as an image ? Or is it a different process so you can boot to USB thumb drive, after setting the boot order in the BIOS so that it can ?

its exactly like installing to a hard drive rather than creating an iso image.

how big is your usb?

what do you want to do with it?...you lose free space if you put an os on there

So then I just create partitions and format a file system on my 2 GB USB flash drive, and then run the Linux installer to install on it, right? I also found a USB drive with Ubuntu pre-installed on it, and bootable at the Canadian site called; www.thelinuxstore.ca And I plan to use it for mostly for a show Linux to friends and relatives, and as a rescue tool too.
