bootable cd won't boot - bios error?

I've downloaded suse 9.3 iso's and have burned them to a cd using MagicIso to create a bootable CD. It took me a little while to work this out but now I have another problem. When the pc boots up, it starts to boot from the cd using the floppy image thing and after lots of whirring from the CD and Hraddrive action (about 5minutes) I get a messgae saying: 'Your BIOS cannot boot from this CD' and everything stops.
I am running an Asus A7V8X-X mobo (which has never had it's bios updated) with an athlon XP 2500+ cpu and 512meg RAM - how easy is it to upgrade the bios and will this solve the problem?

For the BIOS your best bet is to get on the ASUS support site and see whether a similar problem has been reported for your mobo. If it has been a BIOS update should be available, and is usually installable via boot floppy or a little Windows app.

There might be a problem with the CD you burned - did you check the MD5sum of the ISO, and verify the burn afterwards? Test the CD on a second PC if possible.

Hi rjwilmsi,

I'm on ASUS's website now, but it's not easy to navigate. I have never used the EZflash utility but i am aware that i have it and have found instructions on their site as to how to use it.

I have had suse 9.0 before booting fine (but i didn't make the CD's) so was suprised when these didn't boot...

Can you suggest and MD5 check utility? I downloaded MD5summer (i think that was the name) last night and it crashed my pc

For windows I use the command line md5sum.exe available from http://unxutils.sourceforge.net/ (and other places).
Thinking about your problem though, I reckon 'Your BIOS cannot boot from this CD' means 'BIOS can't boot from this CD as the CD is faulty' not 'BIOS can't boot from this CD because the BIOS has a problem'. If you can boot from a SUSE 9.0 CD then you should clearly be able to boot from a 9.3 one.

I used the MD5 checker you recommended. I got the (one) checksum from the BitTorrent source I downloaded from, but it matched none of the 5 iso files hashes. I take it all the 5 files should have the same hash result, and it should be the same value as the hash I got from the original download location - right?
