boot problem/ partition problem?

On booting fedora, get welcome to Fedora, small bit of action then nothing else happens. Used Knoppix live cd and looked at hda - 3 partitions there but second one type not known. Could this be cause of my lack of boot. Any way to fix without reformat as dont want to lose unbacked up material. Did try to reinstall Krud fedora but machine stops at "looking for installed components". Am very new at this Linux stuff, recent graduate from OS/2.

Assuming that /dev/hda1 is the main boot partition, can you mount that partition while booted up in Knoppix? If so, mount it, and take a look at /etc/fstab on it.
Is the system trying to mount /dev/hda2 (the unknown partition) to anything?
