boot diskette questions

I had a couple question I'm hoping someone could help me out with

1. I'm unable to read boot diskettes that I create through make bzdisk. I have /dev/fd0 set for auto on filesystem. All other diskettes read and write fine however when attempting to mount boot diskette it says you must specitfy filesystem type. What's the solution?

2. When booting with diskette how do I interrupt to process so I can
chose another root location option. Like instead of using /dev/hda1 as root use /dev/hda8
