Black screen of death again!

I love linux and I love being microsoft free however, randomly, my Xserver will crash and I will get a black screen and have to reboot.

i have tried everything and made sure my on board video is configured and my monitor is set up right and it still happens.

I have also tried multiple distros: RH9, Suse 9, Fedora Core, Mandrake 9.1

and still have the same problem!

Don't know the problem, however, CTRL-ALT-Backspace should restart X without having to reboot.
Then have a look at /var/log/messages and the latest version of /var/log/XFree86.x.log. (You can see which is the latest one with
ls -lrt /var/log/XF* and see the datestamp

to see if there is any errors indicating what is causing the problem.

i did try to update my video drives one time but i dont really know how exactly to do it. the instrustions were very vague. is there a generic set of directions to follow or is it hardware specific?

what card you using ?

AngelOfTheDamn 01-24-2004 04:21 PM

 hope it not a Sis video card, i'm allways get the same trouble with this kinds of product and you should change your video card setting to lowest value ( use Vesa default ) and lift the value step by step, i never can up to 32 bit color with a Sis card

Its an on-board VIA but the driver that Linux uses is Trident Cyberblade Generic
