Bit tornado just can't connect.

please help
i am trying to run Bit Tornado, and i've tried many different torrent files, but all i get is a black light, it says "connecting to peers" and after a minute i get an error- "Problem connecting to tracker - timeout exceeded"

i've opened my ports, but even without the ports opened i should still get a yellow light.
I've just installed Debian 3.1 and i have haven't installed any other firewall software.

i think it has root permission. i right click on the btdownloadcurses file, go to properties, then permissions and it says:
file owner: root
file group: root
and all the check boxes are ticked for owner, group and others.

it's like there is no connection to the internet from bit tornado at all, there's nothing.

i've also tried the bittorrent command line program but that does the same thing.
