Best window manager for older teacher newbie

I've got a teacher that I'm hoping to turn to Linux and he's thinking of buying a Macintosh because that's what he uses at school. I'm wondering what window manger would be best for him (a sharp guy, but not a computer guy). He's used to the older Mac OS's... 8.6 or 9.1.
My personal favorites for window managers would be either GNOME (because of how much it can work like an older Macintosh with the menu bar at the top. And yes, I know it's a desktop environment, not a window manager.) but I have had alot of trouble with GNOME 2.4 that comes with Slackware 9.1 or Fluxbox (no trouble at all and it's simple).
Any thoughts?

And, on a related note, can you create desktop icons in fluxbox?

there is always KDE as well which can do what you are talking about (menubar on top of screen), try here: http://www.plig.org/xwinman/

With a little imagination and some work, you can get IceWM to behave like the old MacOS/System, or even a bit like MacOSX. You may need to run certain applications along side the WM (such as something for desktop icons, etc) - I have used fbdesk before now and I found it quite good. Of course, you're gonna be hard pressed to get something that feels just like a Mac, because it isn't a Mac.
