since hp bought palm (webos runs on a linux kernel) i think all their printers (especially network ones which are esentially tcp-ip pc's embedded in a printer probably running webos) they tend to work ootb.

HP are probably best, and most distros come with HPLIP — HP LInux Imaging and Printing — to manage them.

Epson has a good range available from http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/search/01/search/
Samsung do a unified driver package, available from their site.
Canon have a site for Linux: http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/software/linux/

I am very happy with Brother who have supported Linux for a long while. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com.../en/index.html

I've owned multiple Brothers and they all work like a charm. HP is great too, though their cartridges cost more... so I default to Brother.

Canon is rubbish- few of theirs support Linux.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for ALL your valuable input!

I used to be a Microsoft boy did my MCSE2003 but have now jumped onto the Linux wagon :hattip:

I find myself having to make sure every time i buy a printer too make sure that it will work with my Linux box.

I assume this is the correct process. Brother and HP seems to be the direction my head is pointing. Maybe ill try Brother for a change :)

Thanks
Marios

God, I hope my newly purchased HP - LaserJet Laser Printer - Monochrome - 1200 x 1200 dpi Print - Plain Paper Print - Desktop works when it gets here.

I got tired of the "easy-bake oven" plastic, mass-produced, disposable printers with cartridges that cost more than the printer itself, so I spent 3 times the price.

This suggests it IS supported by hplip:

Best Printer Driver Support for Linux
Hello

I can't say who provides the "best" support, but as noted by others above, Brother seems to be very good at providing support for Linux. I've had half a dozen or so different Brother laser printers over the years and each of them have worked great under Linux. My next printer purchase will very likely be another Brother laser printer.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Much appreciated.

I should add that all those Brother printers that have worked so well for me under Linux were from their "HL" series. I've not ever tried their other lines of printers so can't speak for them.

Great, Thank you ozar!

Hi.

I've recently bought a hp deskjet 3520 and can report that it works flawlessly under linux.
Had success with Ubuntu, Arch and now slackware.
Not sure who would stock them in SA, but it cant be that hard to find. I paid around $65 Australian dollars 6 months ago.

(oh, the wireless works out of the box too :) )

Thanks for your valuable input. Did you need to install HPLIP ?

Sorry for the late reply.

I installed the HPLIP to set up the wireless connection. (on slackware)
Didn't try it without installing HPLIP, but has worked flawlessly with no HPLIP on ubuntu 12.10.
