Best Packaging System

I was just curious to know what your favorite packaging system is ?
And why is it your favorite?

linuxbotx 01-06-2004 12:04 AM

RPM's are good, but the sort of install on the system rather than unpack, DEB's are for debian specific machines. TGZ (.tar.gz) is pretty much the only universal packaging system (other than .zip).

Besides, you should not have put in DEB and RPM for they are not packing systems, but more installation packing systems. You should have used BZ2, ZIP, etc...

no, TGZ refers to the .tgz packaging system in slackware linux. it's like an RPM. it does not refer to .tar.gz which is used just for compression.

he said packaging systems and not packing systems. packaging is what you call installation packing.

Why isn't Gentoo's emerge system on that list?

samhob 01-06-2004 11:50 AM

i really agree with .deb
its such easy to use , easier than rpm ... sources are automatically managed.

I agree with antik; where's portage?

.TGZ

Slackware is best.

There is nothing like Slackware and Swaret.

I love swaret.

TGZ's all the way..... slapt-get is my new toy.... Who said TGZ's dont have dependency-checking?

I like RPMs best, but only if they're managed with a good APT repository. Otherwise, DEBs are best, since most distributions that use them are just Debian mods, they can be easily set up to use Debian's apt repository (the most extensive and best one around, IMHO)

I'm sorry for not putting in Gentoo's Emerge system. I am also not very familiar with Gentoo. Does Gentoo use it's own packaging format?
