Best Linux distro right now

I had a short break from Linux and aquired a new computer and laptop running XP (ewww) and am ready to go back!

Been using Linux for some time now, about 3 years, was using Ubuntu on my Dell that I sold but its got sound issues and its a bit dull!

So whats the hot distribution everyone has been talking about this year that I can burn and try out? If not, I'm going to try SuSE again and install a proper Apt like package manager :-)

I heard Arch mentioned a bit here within the last few months so i tried it and absolutly loved it, had everything i wanted, bleeding edge software, package manager, no graphical/odd distro configs.

I'd recomend it whole heartedly but no idea if you'll like it

Arch is excellent---and a great learning tool. I'm not sure it satisfies this criteria:

That sounds like the worst idea I have heard in months. If you want apt, get a distro that uses it.... (Oh--I see you were kidding... )

Sounds like a good idea, I'll burn Arch tonight and see what she can do! As for SuSE, your right, I think I will stay clear of it from now on :-)

Try SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3. It includes all the software out of the box which a notmal user would think about. The look and feel is too good. It is based on Debian. It's good.

Give pclinuxos a try - I can't post url's yet www pclinuxos com/news.php

It's rpm based but uses synaptic and has no dependancy issues. You can try out the livcd and install from that if you like. An updated version is coming out around the end of the month so keep that in mind.

Ubuntu is simply the best distro that I have used to date. Considering that the following distros have been used: Redhat, Fedora, Suse, Mandrake, and Debian.

Yes, that's true. I have Kubuntu 5.10 and I just love it. But, I have also used SimplyMEPIS on my room mates laptop. I liked it more that Kubuntu as I didn't have to add any packages to from the internet like -
1) GAIM.
2) skpye.
3) Amarok mp3 support
4) DivX codecs.
5) firefox, etc

For some display problems, I can't get it to work on my 810 PC.
