Best Linux cloud backup?

Hello All,

I've been using SpiderOak cloud backup to back up my files. I've been having trouble with it and am looking for something different. I've looked at Carbonite Basic but it doesn't support Linux. Can someone please recommend a good Linux-friendly backup service?

Thanks Much

Best is rather a subjective question. What is most important, cost or speed, reliability or what?

I've seen a number posts on how to use common cloud like google or microsoft to save data. I've seen people get rack space online and setup a backup server.

Agreed, it is quite subjective. However, one to at least look at would be Tarsnap if you don't just go and set up your own VPS.

Tarsnap - Online backups for the truly paranoid

That is funny. :)

Might be worth a try.

There is simply no denying that Dropbox rules the cloud storage world. One of the first few cloud storage service provider, Dropbox has kept innovating and introducing new features to become one of the best vidmate cloud services out there. A sleek web interface and an excellent desktop client make it the best choice for Linux users.

Good luck. I thought I read the above somewhere.

Not true. It is the myriad of self-hosted cloud solutions that rule the cloud storage world.

My two cents worth: do you really want the 'cloud'? All that means (to me, at least) is you are putting your files on someone else's computer and trusting their maintenance, security and reliability instead of your own. Perhaps I am just paranoid, but 'all fishermen are liars except you and me and I'm not too sure about you'. Unless you are backing up gazillions of terabytes of files or there is some other overriding reason I always feel better with everything under my control. There are a number of good open source systems available. Personally I use rsnapshot. I have a raspberry pi with a large external drive set up on my LAN just for daily backups. I backup the backup periodically to one of two portable external drives (actually a WD Passport but there are lots available). Once a month I swap the passports keeping one stored off site at all times (my wife's office). The drives are not expensive. The pi certainly isn't and is perfectly capable of doing the job. If you are really enamored of the cloud or on too limited a budget, then by all means ignore all I have said. Otherwise give it some thought. I know I'm just an old man set in my ways, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

The backup plan one uses is kind of personal in some ways. There isn't really a right or wrong answer to it.

Any backup is better than none I usually believe.

True that one ought to encrypt data before it leaves your control.

At one time we used to backup on Windows NT and then restore in am. We still backup on tape for some systems and put in fireproof box and rotate tapes between installations in case of disaster.

A good backup plan can use remote storage to isolate geophysical issues.

I use a few and ok, I use Google Drive as I have had an account since it was invite only in the 90s... I have others, but I do like how in Debian you can add your account and the Google Drive shows up in the File Manager and it is lightning quick - like a local drive almost for me.
