Seriously, Linux can be built to fit on a 1.4Mbyte floppy. I would look into things like Arch, Gentoo, and--for the purist--LFS (Linux from scratch) To fit into a small space, you need to get up on the curve as to what components do what.
Actually Arch will not do because it runs on a min. spec of 686 (although there is a version for 586 but not very popular).
Do we know what CPU the OP has? I certainly cant tell from the specs given.
Part of my Arch suggestion has to do with learning how to build a system in stages---I have learned more in 1 month with Arch than in my first 3 months of other distros
I did a little google work ( on NEC Versa 2405CD) before I posted and seems to me, based on that, that at best that system is a PI.
I concur that Arch will be an outstanding learning ground but just wanted to point the min. requirements in case he gets frustrated if the install does not go well because of the basic requirements.
