Basic digital asset storage system!

hey!

Didnt know where to ask this question.

Im doing some research for a basic asset management system. Right now we do have just file structures and we use disk search tools to find various files in our system.

This works but as our projects grows it all becomes a little bit difficult to track different versions, setups etc.

So, what is the basics of a asset management system? we are mostly working with media tools/assets and the following features are necessary:

Asset tracking
* Version
* Context
* Identification
* Simple View

Whats the strategy for setting up a system? I want to keep the file structure but add it all to a database for easy and fast access but how do I keep the db updated?

Tips, suggestions etc are very welcome!

Thanks!
