bad superblock after HD move

I recently used knoppix to move my "/" from one hd to another. The move went ok, and as it stands I can mount al my drves under knoppix just fine. All data is there, and permissions are correct.

After restoring grub using my FC1 disk, fedora itself won't boot. It says this:

ext3-fs: unable to read superblock
mount: error 22...
...kernel panic: [somehting abut init, as init could not start because of this problem.]

I used mkfs.ext3 to format the already created partition on the drive, then I used cp to copy all the files over. I still have my old hard drive around, so not all hope it lost.

the new partition is smaller than the other one, but still large enough to house all the files, with some breathing room ofcourse.

If you have a better way of doing this than creating the partition and using cp -av to copy files over, please tell me!!

fsck /dev/hdb1 states that the partition is clean.

fdisk -l shows that the partition is in place, and the right size.

I'm not sure how to get fdisk from reading hda, isntead of hdb, as hdb is my drive that won't boot

I must've done something that totally screwed over my drive, as it no longer does anything for me. Question now it: what do I use to copy the files over, instead of cp.

thanks!
