Bad quality movies in Ubuntu/Kubuntu
 

when i play movies with any media players in windows, the quality is better than Linux. i have searched the net but no solution. it looks like the edges are too sharp (in a bad way) and are noticeable. i think that it might have to do with anti aliasing, but not sure. lets say it's like playing a video game under 800*600 with no anti aliasing! of course when i make the size of the movie smaller the quality gets better.

Please help, because the only reason why i use windows is because of my movies.

Sounds like your graphics card may not be configured optimally. Give us make and tell us whether you are using generic drivers or manufacturer drivers.

It is a radeon 9600xt. I haven't installed any drivers so i guess, it is the generic drivers.

I suggest getting the drivers from ATI and installing as per their readme to get the best performance. I use an Nvidia card and the performance with Linux is superior to W32.

i checked their web site, and it's difficult to install the driver, from system requirements point of view. by the way thanks for your reply.

I succeeded in installing the ati driver, but the quality is still bad, worse than windows. here is how my setup looks like:

Take a look at the x.org log file in /var/log. There are many articles on the net about tweaking the performance. Is the kernel agp module been installed?

I found the solution in another forum. all i had to do was Try different video outputs. For example: install xine-ui and set the video output to xv in the preferences. and changed this settings :
