backup device

Hi
I am using a software to back up my files in the Linux server and today I tested some files by backing it up to the DLT tape cartridge. It is mapped to /dev/st0. How do I navigate the tape in my shell prompt. Going to shell prompt I typed cd dev
and cd st0 it says st0 is not a directory.
Basically I want to verify the files I have backed up..How do I do.
this question may look silly..excuse me being a newbie

You'll need to use whatever software you used for the backup to verify the tape, you can't just do a cd /dev/st0 as the tape doesn't contain a true file system - just a stream of bytes. Also as tapes don't support random access it would take you a while to like the files and/or use the device.

cheers

Jamie...
