Backing up

May be a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.
When I ran winblozes, I'd back up my e-mail, documents, selected programs and what not.

Well, in Linux, I hear that you can backup config files so when you reinstall, it's like what it was, nearly of course. And what about RPMs. There's a DB of what is installed currently, and if I re-install, I do soemthign with this save DB.

I'm running SuSE 8.0 and there is a YaST2 backup module. But I'm finding trouble figurign out what it's gonna do. I'm not sure if it'll backup my whole system or selected files/dirs.

Any opinions.

Erik

Guess that's a philosophical question :)

If you don't back-up the entire box saving the RPM-database is
more likely to cause trouble than helping you... a more technical
approach would be to save your packet selections from YaST to
a floppy or the like, so the re-installed system will have the
identical RPM packets installed, and then just restore your
configuration files. Or at least that's how I'd do it :) if I were
using SuSE (didn't touch it since 7.0 though, and then was using
the textmode YaST ... was easy to save selections back then)

HIH :)

Cheers,
Tink
