Background speaker noise

Hello all,
A long shot, but here goes...
I have a stereo receiver hooked up to my computer, because I do not have a remote, the volume on the receiver is kept at a fairly high level, and volume is adjusted via the output from the computer. When I am not playing any music, there is a noise from the speakers that is just loud enough to be annoying. The noise goes away whenever there is a load on the cpu, such as if I scroll up and down on a web page, or loading a webpage. The instant the load is gone the noise is back. Is it too much to hope for a software fix? How about some sort of filter on the output? Any suggestions?

Thats strange, I would figure it would be the other way around like on my system when the hard drive is accessed I hear a whizzing noise from my speakers then it disappears. There are filters but I dont know off hand what to suggest, maybe check out an audio shop or websites.
