back up problem

hai al,
i have need some answer about a backing up issue.
we have a 5 remote machines in a 192.168.0.0 lan. i can access to this lan by ssh on the through gatway. i need to backup files in all those machine to my local machine using scp and adding task to cron job. how can i do this? no 3rd party tools allowed. so i am thinkg about rsync using ssh key.
first rsysnc from the remote machines to the gateway then from the gateway to local machine.
is that ok ? but i have to rsync twice.

If you're going to rsync from THOSE machines, you should be able to just route the packets. Worst case scenario, you could use port forwarding or similar.
