Post BACK/FORWARD icon in your browser

Hi everyone !

Here is a very basic question.

Can anyone tell me why some time we cannot use the BACK icon ? ("back arrow of your favorite web browser)
Indeed we have some time the feeling to be stuck on a special web page. Though you would like to continue clicking on BACK in order to have the previous page but you can't since you stay on the latest web page visited !!!

Thanks a lot

Some pages use javascript that delete the history which effectively disables the "back" button from working.

I wonder if ALT-LeftArrow would work in that case.

@OP if this is a persistent problem, because I've seen it too, then open the target link in a new tab so that you can retain the original one.

That's what I always do.

Every browser that I've seen will take a middle-click (press on the scrollwheel on a mouse, tap with 3 fingers on a touchpad, or press both buttons of a touchpad) as an "open in new tab" command.

In my opinion, it should not be feasible to do so with javascript.
(API should not be provided...)

It is so annoying when occuring..

yes but the "tuning" is not so easy.
Completely disabling Java is quite violent, isn'it ?
So the right balance is tricky :-(

I believe that the two posts above (or below, depending on your settings) are actually referring to JavaScript, which is used on almost every web site. (Though a lot of times it goes a bit too far, which is why I use NoScript.)

I know that soft, I got it too.

But I'm not such an expert to avoid the 'BACK issue' [if we can name it so].

Either, I block everything or just advert. But I don't know how to only block the code dedicated to the BACK procedure.

If you know how to do so, I'm willing to learn

Really?? Never had that. And I never experienced disability of "back" button. If JavaScript does that, it raises the question what do we have WWW for? We used to have it to share information...

Such an API can have its uses. For example, I sometimes go to a forum, click a thread, read it, then click "back". But if I leave a reply on that thread, when I click "back" I end up at the screen to post the reply. So theoretically, an API like that could allow the forum to remove the reply entry in my history (and maybe viewing the thread right before it) so that I only need to click "back" once to get where I want to.

And no, I'm not complaining/ranting, I'm just providing an example.
