Automatically update "Applications" menu entries from /opt/local/share/applications

Hello,

I'm using gnome and my applications are installed in /opt/local, so the related .desktop files are automatically put in /opt/local/share/applications. The problem is that the gnome "Applications" menu doesn't see that directory, so the shortcuts don't appear in the "Applications" menu. Does someone know how to make the shortcuts appear in the "Applications" menu, without having to manually edit the "Applications" menu entries?

Thanks in advance!

What version (distro) of Linux are you using?

I think what you are describing is normally handled by the package manager

Thanks, pixellany. I am using Red Hat Enterprise 6. I am just wondering if there is a mechanism (e.g. setting "/opt/local/share/applications" to some environment variable) to let the system monitor the changes in /opt/local/share/applications so that the "Applications" menu entries can be automatically updated.
