auto mounting is not working properly

hi friends,

i am using ubuntu 8.04 and i am facing a problem of mounting external pen drive, exernal harddisk or even other /dev/ partitions in my login .. auto mount is not working
so i manually mount the partition by mount command .. but i dont know how i can resolve this problem ...

fdisk -l currently returns as
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160000000000 bytes

Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
