Audio in lspci; but not recognized in /var/log/dmesg


I have no sound.
I do not have a /dev/dsp
My sound card shows up in lspci

hebrews:/home/edhe# lspci | grep Audio
00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

but not in /var/log/dmesg

Hi fof3, Could we also see the output from the following please?

Have you tried alsamixer, does it return any errors?

I installed alsamixergui (Debian) and got this message:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: no such device

I believe you'll need to update your alsa drivers and possibly your kernel. Try the alsa drivers first. You can get them here.
