Attansic Ethernet controller

Hi all

I am a relative newbie to the linux world, and I have an Asus X50RL laptop that is running Ubuntu 7.04. I cannot get the ethernet card to detect upon installation. I have been told that I should run lspci to identify the device, and this is the ethernet controller line:
Code:
06:00.0 Ethernet Controller: Attansic Technology Corp. Unknown device 2048 (rev a0).
I also have a atheros wifi ethernet controller but I don't use wifi so thats not an issue I need to face.

Can anyone tell me if they have seen and/or dealt with a similar problem?
Remember I don't know alot about Linux.

Glenn.

Ubuntu 7.04 is too old, and doesn't support this chipset. It looks like you'll need the atl2 module to get it to work
You could try a live-cd of 8.10 and see if your chipset is detected, or see here: http://artagnon.wikidot.com/asus-f5r...ing-with-linux
where there is a link to an atl-l2 tar file you can extract and maybe compile on your current system.

Tredegar's right. Get Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10. I've got the X50RL (also called the F5RL), and the ethernet connection works out of the box with 8.04 with no problem. If you can't download an .iso, look out for linux magazines giving away Ubuntu CDs or DVDs.

Let us know how you get on.
I haven't got round to trying a wireless connection yet on my X50RL, but I've read one or two articles, and that shouldn't be much of a problem.
