imho xawtv is the best, because iot's the worst. it does very very little, and so there's next to nothing to go wrong.
are you sure the tv card is installed correctly? if it is, and you've set up the country codes etc.. xawtv will always work perfectly.
check the bttv driver documention for details abuot the best configuration in /etc/modules.conf.
