Are you running a server?
In the start of january, I'll be making my newley setup linux/apache server live.
I'm going to be running the server on a 512k ADSL line. Just out of interest, who else is running a web server, what spec is the server, and what are you using for your internet connection(speed)? I just want to know if sharing my normal home pc and server on the same connection is going to cause problems, ie. server running slow etc. And if people post links to there webserver, then I can see how fast things run. |
Hi,
I too am running a webserver however it's protected with username/password because I only want it available for me and my friends only (sorry) :). Anyhow, the specs of my machine are: AMD K6-2 400mhz 192 RAM 70 Gig HD It's an E-machine (I hate those slow computers) but hey, it's run very nice in linux. I have a cable modem line and what I have noticed that if you have huge file transfers while your playing online games then yes..the network is a bit congested. It all really depends on how many hits to your webserver that you are expecting. if it's just friends and family, shouldn't be too bad. But if it were for business, again, depends on how many hits you expect. -twantrd |
I dont expect major amounts of hits. I have hosting with a company at the moment, that I will continue to use to advertise my services etc, but the home server is more for me to test websites on, and I'll be putting up my own website with all sorts of stuff on, dont ask what, coz I havnt decided yet.

P2 200mhz
384 ram 3x 40 gig hd dsl 384kb/s up so far only using for my own personal webserver and file server (samba) |
P3 450mhz
384 ram 2x 37GB hdd 512Kb/s ADSL And it serves the following to my home network and me while I'm at work and some friends: HTTP + Java servlet container for webmail, FTP, samba, IMAP, streaming MP3,giftd, and it's also the network firewall. It's doesnt really see heavy usage very often though, except recently I've developed a facination with gift, and subsequently the FTP server is seeing more activity due to the changes in available content. But the machine is coping just fine ;) |
so the conclusion so far is, alot of people seem to be using a low spec machine as a server without any problems.
What about your connections to the internet, do they cope ok? |
you get what you pay for ;)
But 512/256 suits me OK... I'll be getting 1500/256 when I move back to aus next year though :D I wish the UK/AUS had the same infrastucture and options as Japan... Yahoo BB's 26Mbps package costs about ?20 per month. Here I'm paying about ?30 for 512Kbps. |
For the web...
RH9 PIII 700 512mb 64mb ATI 2x20g hd Apache, Mail, FTP, SSH Cable 384up /3124down Low volume, Handles it with aplomb |
Cable here and my current connection speeds reach what is equivalent to T1/T2 lines. Though they do cap the upload I think at 128kbps but I don't see any problems when I'm browsing my site from work or other locations and I only grant access to family and friends to download, it seems to hold up well and fairly fast.
Which server do you want to know about? They range from 800mhz down to 200mhz.. ;) |
so you got more than one server than?

Servers run apache, ftp, ssh mainly. Internal one's running samba, NFS and such for internal sharing, etc. I don't find any impact on my connection either. I can be downloading on one machine and uploading on two others, etc and not see one bit of slowdown most of the time. Cheers. |

P4, 1.7ghz
1GB RAM Two 120 GB harddrives. Cable (cox business service) From the looks of the other posts it seems you can run a sturdy server on old machines... You should be fine. :> |
Celeron 2.4
512Mb Ram Raid1 160Gb SATA Wireless ISP - 100kB (speed varies due to weather). ClarkConnect integrated server/firewall/gateway (based on EL4) running apache, php, MySQL, postfix, squid, dansguardian.
