architecture frustration

Hi guys I was helping out a friend of mine to recompile the kernel for athlon optimization, he has RH7.2, now it says
uname -m
even after the recompilation, I've never encountered such obsticle before all my kernels show me athlon.
Is there anything that can be done? Or am I too paranoid about it?

I think you're too paranoid
uname -m command give me i686 too, instead of Athlon... but I don't think this affect performance
