Apache not starting up!

I am trying to run Apache on YellowDog Linux 3.0.1. I start it up and it says "OK" but when I do a

> ps -e | grep httpd

it is not running! Any suggestions?

A related question: I am running my webserver through a router. In my apache config, should I enter my "server name" as my private IP address (10.x.x.x) or my public IP address (69.x.x.x)?

try acessing it from another computer. It maybe some weird inetd thing where if it senses a request on port 80 or something, it'll start up httpd. Just a thought, not too sure though.

Actually apache processes are called httpd.

How are you starting apache? Have you tried running it manually or is that what your already doing? What commands are you using? More details get better reponses.

I've tried:
> /etc/init.d/httpd restart
and it says it started "OK" but then it does not show up in the
> ps -e | grep httpd
command.

I get a "connection refused" when I try connecting to localhost or 10.0.1.3 or 127.0.0.1 on the same computer I am running apache on.

I have also tried turning off my firewall and that doesn't help, either.

The file /etc/httpd/logs/error_log is empty.

The file /etc/httpd/logs/ssl_error_log contains several lines of the following:
[Mon Sep 06 13:11:32 2004] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?)
[Mon Sep 06 13:11:32 2004] [warn] RSA server certificate CommmonName (CN) 'localhost.localdomain' does NOT match server name!?

I'm assuming this is a problem witrh my httpd.conf file. I've tried setting my ServerName to my private IP address behind my router (10.0.1.3) and I've also tried setting it to localhost. Any suggestions on what to try next?

With the error provided that you stated here:

The file /etc/httpd/logs/ssl_error_log contains several lines of the following:
[Mon Sep 06 13:11:32 2004] [warn] RSA server certificate is a CA certificate (BasicConstraints: CA == TRUE !?)
[Mon Sep 06 13:11:32 2004] [warn] RSA server certificate CommmonName (CN) 'localhost.localdomain' does NOT match server name!?

What do have configured in your httpd.conf file? What is your actual hostname/servername, etc? Have you gone over your httpd.conf file for accuracy?
