Let's start "Linux for Children" distro. :D

Start and IRC channel for Development?
I have created a IRC channel on irc.freenode.org #thenewlinux, for now as we do not have a name yet. It has been registered with the chanserv, so we do not have to worry about not being OP'ed when we are in.

i downloaded MIRC for windows to chat about this. how do i connect to the server ? What is the IRC server ??? what port is it ? what group is it ? MIRC needs this info to connect. i need help connecting too if anyone knows this. if there is an easier way to connect, do tell... |
looks like a few are coming around traked.
im real new to Linux, but I've dumped Windows from my home comp for good. a solid distro would be great. after all, theres loads of packages you can get if you need em. best way to learn more is to get your feet wet. good luck, hopefully in the future I may know enough in some area that I can contribute. |
The irc server is irc.freenode.net port 6667, th channel is #thenewlinux (for now, until we have a more official name

just close out of the connet screen, and at the window there type /server irc.freenode.net 6667 when connected type: /join #thenewlinux On another Note - maybe we should run a bot to Auto op/voice etc? |
i got in...nobody was there. ill go in as often as possible to chat about this new distro if it is getting the "GO".
IMHO, i would LOVE a gaming distro. Base it on the looks of lycoris linux. |
I have one I call Davix
I can't really call it a distro because it's not distributed. It's more of a personal linux system. It's not much at the moment, but it's mine. It's kind of cool having it. It runs in ram only at the moment. It needs a lot of work, and it's on the back burner for now. Go for it. I would suggest no rpms. Why I say this is due to the dependency problems. The way I see it is to start with GNU Linux bare bones, that will be built on install. Then work out what apps can be built on it and what the library problems will be encountered, solve them and then continue adding more apps. This would be more or less a system that will be installed like an lfs system. It would take several hours to install, but it would be optimized for the hardware it's installed on. That's just the way I see it. Of course it's yours and it should reflect your ideas. I think that once the install scripts for the bare system and bootdisks are worked out, adding apps should go pretty quick. And you will need to pay some attention to the legal aspects of what your doing. Many things are just not legal, or are in dispute at the current time. Good Luck. |
There is a bot now in #thenewlinux named New Linux. Looking for someone to host it, once I found a more reasonable bot to do the job.
I am in there but idleing.. |
Why not make it similar to Gentoo, compile everything from source, good documentation, but do everything yourself. I like the idea of a gaming distro, find a way to incorperate winex, and help the users get games working with ease. Bascially make it like Lindows, like the way they incorporate wine into their distro.
If you ask me a gaming distro should be made of the basics, using fluxbox. |
we are open to ideas. Please join the chat room to discuss the ideas please
|
you are looking at a very unstable monstrocity if you do that
|
My point was not to emulate the POS windows, my point was to
make it attractive to game developers. If we wanted, Quote:
The point is to make linux an attractive gaming OS so that developers will develop for the system, not so they can say, "Well, we don't have to worry about writing it for linux because there's that distribution that does all the work for us by emulating windows." |
I hope we can have a general meeting. Set the date to Sat Jan 11 2003 around 7 PM EST. Please be there to discuss some options
|
Just a reminder...we are supposed to be discussing this right now at irc.freenode.org #thenewlinux
Please join in if you want to help... |
