dunno abut gimp, dont think so.. Ive heard povray can do something like you seek.

There's the reason gif's and free software pretty much just don't go together. It is not an open format. There is a patent on the compression algorithm.

There is an alternative called MNG (similar to PNG) which supports animation and compression, similar to gif's. Here's some info on them:

Supposedly you can manipulate the gimp to still produce a gif. Read this:

mvan83, I wont go much to offtopic, but I will not for the common good, that mng:s realy arnt ready for use yet. The only app I could find that would display one was konqueror, and it allways crashed halfway through. Sure, gifs are bad ye, but if the question isnt "are gifs good" were not in the position to judge.. Kinda reminds me of the "whynot use debian?" people.. (;

Aanyways, I just wanted to warn you that for eg. firefox and most of the mainstream browsers dont support mng, as on the otherhad they support animated gifs. Its your choise, get it working or stay by your ideology.

edit: oh yeah, and just remembered, by the end of 2004 the gif patents most have expired, so mostly they arnt a problem anymore. The burnallgifs campaign has pretty much shut its doors too.

The "convert" program from ImageMagick can do this. I believe it is also possible with gimp but I don't know how.

I wasn't urging him to use MNGs. I was informing him that that's an open format, regardless of how supported it is.

I answered his question that the gimp can in fact produce a gif. Nowhere did I make any judgments whatsoever. I provided him factual information, so I don't know why you're accusing me of making judgment calls.

Straight from the first link I provided: "U.S. IBM patent expires 11 August 2006." Until all patents have expired, you probably won't see a lot of linux programs supporting creating gifs.

isnt MNG is a kind of lossless compression whose file size is way larger than animated GIF? (as PNG to JPG)
