I never could get the sound to work right on my RH7.3 box. I could play CD's fine but no sound from XMMS, Xine or anything like that. I recently went to RH8.0 and it seems to be detecting my soundcard fine (a via built into board) but wont play the test sounds just like when I was running 7.3, but now I also cant play CD's like I could under 7.3. I checked that PNP OS is disabled in the bios, and it is so that is not the problem. Any idea what I could do to get this working? I thought about trying another card I have but I read something about having to recompile the kernel if I change the card. Is that the case? because I really wouldnt have a clue how to do that.

Do you happen to know what 'card' is onboard, exactly? It is possible that all you need to do is ensure that the correct module is being loaded... take a look at the output from dmesg and see if there's anything in there about your card...?

when I run soundcard detection from the redhat menu, it detects it as:

But can you get sound once you've run the soundconfig program? If so, can you get sound when you reboot, or do you have to run the program again?

I tried that but when I do soundconfig or sndconfig sndconf I just get command not found so either it isnt in RH8.0 or I dont know the proper command. I know I did that in 7.3 but I cant find it in 8.0.

OK, lets try another avenue then... (I don't run RH and I can't remember what they've changed the sndconfig program to now... perhaps config-sound, or something? - Who knows!)

As root, edit the file /etc/modules and add via82cxxx_audio to it - nothing else, just that line on it's own. Also, you might want to check out the file /etc/modules.conf and add/change a line so that it reads alias sound via82cxxx_audio. Save these, type (as root) modprobe via82cxxx_audio and cross your fingers.

looks like that line is in there so I didnt mess with it. Does it look OK? Now when I did modprobe via82cxxx_audio I get the following....

This looks bad to me but I dont know what to do about it. The only thing that really catches my eye here is the line in the conf file that says remove sound-slot-0. Does that hold any signifigance?
