What is anonymous FTP and how it differ from "normal" ftp?

anonymous ftp allows anyone to login with anonymous and a password of a email address to upload and download to an ftp server.

Do I have to provide my email address in order to download or upload?

usually, but i am sure you don't have to put your correct address. it just takes that format to log you into the server. i am sure dummy@hotmail.com would work.. ;)
