anaconda unable to probe monitor

anaconda 'unable to probe monitor' in a RedHat 8.0 installation, no matter what monitor I use, and graphical installation fails (blank screen). Tried text-install, succeeded, but reboot fails because GRUB apparently doesn't like my NVidia chipsets. Re-installed choosing LILO as bootloader, LILO hangs on 'L'! Booting from boot diskette through linux <params> gets me to a login, but many commands aren't recognised. Sounds like several problems here, but I'd like to fix the 'unable to probe monitor' first. Any suggestions gratefully received.

I had the same problem with my 17 LCD monitor by GEM.

what you are going to need is to choose generic nivida drivers for now.

then you check unprobed monitor and you are going to have to manually set the vert and horz syincs. I found mine off of my manual at GEM's web site.

after that save and reboot.

that was my soultion.....what do you get when you do the comman redhat-config-xf86 in root ? if it gives you an error then you have monitor problem. just adjust the syncs and you should be fine.

Many thanks. The plot has now thickened/thinned. I installed Mandrake 9.0 and wiped RedHat 8.0 to see if I could get any further. I did, it's definitely a nvidia driver problem which I'm now tackling.

Hello,

I have the same problem!

Machine:

Athlon 2200+
Asus Motherboard A7N266
Video Card VGA GeForce 2 (on board)
Monitor: I doen't matter I have tried with a couple! :-) The problem remains

to rhmesi:
Did you say that Madrake 9.0 does not have the same problem?
Can I install it fine??

I'm sorry guys (I don't know much about computers) but let me say this:
I have tried to install Red Hat 7.3 in a GRAPHICAL mode (before traing to install 8.0) If you do this the installation does not stop immediatly (after the first few lines) when the "unprobed monitor" appear but it stops when you try to test the monitor at the end of the installation.

I guess this means that it is possible to pass "graphical" information to the system up to the stage before choosing the video card. But I really don't know what RedHat graphical mode of version 7.3 does?

Let's get this sorted!!!

Me again,

I have installed Mandreake 9.0. As far as I can tell it works GOOD! apart from few minor things.

So if you think you don't want to loose you time traying to fix problems You would like to use Mandrake instead. If you want to keep trying with other Linuxes ... then good luck

In a couple of weeks I'll write again to let you know if everithing is still GOOD.

Buy the way between the minor things there is one that I would like to solve quikly. Does anyone now how to solve this:

I have KDE installed.
When I log-off from my session in order to "log in as a different user" I managed to exit my session fine. But when the screen of log-in pops up again the mouse does not work anymore (and I need to restart the machine to get it back). What happens is that the mouse pointer is fix at the center of the screen

Thank you all for your help,
