Amusing or sickening 3.11.5 kernel panic

Is this what's become of Linux?

I was able to get rid of the amusingly garbled Penguins only by disabling DRM when I recompiled 3.11.5.
Didn't anyone test the DRM code before it was merged into the kernel?

The kernel panic itself however remains. Running fsck does not help. The file /sbin/init is available and is a 64-bit ELF executable.

By the way. Who put that ugly Windows 3.1 icon next to the penguin? I guess it's meant as a joke.

1) The screenshot shows a display driver problem. I don't see what DRM has to do with it. Perhaps you're referring to KMS? But tux logo usually disappears when the fbcon kicks in (when the console switches to native resolution) on KMS drivers. I'd guess that your disabling DRM might have just disabled the DRI video drivers as well, but it's hard to tell what you've done, why and what distribution and hardware you have from the above rant...

2) The panic is because the kernel cannot find the root file system - you might want to check the bootloader configuration. Distributions don't ship like that, it's the kind of thing which is usually caused by the person sitting in the chair.

3)Someone called Linux Torvalds. Recompile the kernel again and just disable the tux logo.

I'm using Nouveau and my system has both Intel HD and nVidia video chips.

I'm attempting to boot the new 3.11.5 kernel using the root filesystem of my existing Linux 3.2 system, which boots just fine. All of the pertinent file system drivers are built-in to the new kernel. As you can see it is mounting the root file system. It just cannot find the init executable.

I guess only he can explain his joke then.

He did it to honor the 20th birthday of Windows 3.11.

Did what, put the logo in there? Or create the kernel panics?
