am i missing something in kernel?

my system seems little bit louder than before installing.
sounds like more hard spinning when idle.

thank you!

Are all your screws tightened up? I didn't tighten 2 of the 4 screws holding my hard drive in once and it made a hell of a racket. Also, another time, I found that my audio wire from cd-rom to soundcard was barely touching my cpu fan...now that was loud.

Do you have a lot services running at start up? Check your /var/log/messages file to see what all is loading at boot up. You might find that lots of processes are going on in the background.

Fire up /sbin/hdparm -I and see if you can find any settings (read the man as well) for turning the HD off, or idle when not in use (actually I was looking for the opposite, constant spinning). Seems like the other day I saw something like that...

Cool

I always miss framebuffer support when compiling a new kernel;
