Am I able to delete folders after install?

OK --

say I download a tarball. After I extract the files to a folder, do the ./configure, make, make install...am I able to delete the folder that all the files are extracted to? Or are they like part of what is needed to run the program every time I use it?

i think you can, because all that's left is source and the bineary that is copied into one of the standard executeable directories

you can delete it but it's nice to keep it. You can unstall what you've installed by doing
make uninstall
in that directory. If the directory is gone, you can't do this.

Sounds good...

Ok -- another question.

Those files I want to delete. Say I install them into /home/user/x

Can I create a directory /home/user/programs/ and move all those directories into it AFTEr they have been installed? or is that going to jack up the programs being run in the future?
