Alternative for 'dump' to archive data
I came across a commentary by Linus Torvalds which states that 'dump' should not be used to archive a read/write mounted harddisk. Alternatives for archiving data are cpio and tar. However 'cpio' seems to be really old-fashioned and superceded by tar.
Is 'tar' reliable in a dynamic system (i.e. where files grow continuously) ? If not, which archiving solutions do you recommend?
