alsa muted through OSS ?

I use ALSA sound... but i also compiled in the backwards compatability with OSS.
ater doing all the usual, and un-muting ALSA. the sound is still mute.

even though everything is set to use alsa sound, i have to set the volume with aumix (an OSS volume mix program)

any ideas whats wrong ?

if i compile alsa without backwards compatability with OSS, then its impossible to unmute the volume.
